I just tried listening to my first wax time records reissue of albert king s 1962 debut album the big blues. My thoughts on sound quality of the dol compared with a fully engineered quality master the dol is pleasant but ultimately a little muddy a little like listening to the radio. Dol is a gray market label. But none of them are going to be as good as a properly mastered version from source material.

Even though it is a grey reissue undisclosed source it sounds better to me on the vinyl system than say the original saturn rip sampled on the sun ra community site. I would avoid them along with other public domain labels i e wax time jazz time jazz wax not now doxxy etc if you want good sound and art quality out of them. Dol s pressings are always clean and the sleeves are decent quality as well. Reissues is a recurrent topic among vinyl junkies.

I wouldn t go out of my way to recommend a dol reissue unless you re collecting on a seriously tight budget in which case there are certainly worse options in the case of most classic albums but they re certainly better than their patchy reputation would suggest. Dol is a public domain label and they take cd s as their mastering source. The jacket and the sleeve are high quality and the vinyl looked really nice when i inspected it under normal lighting. I get why they do it they re a lot cheaper than most actual high quality analogue cut reissues although there are some good quality value albums out there via verve stateside amongst others they help get people into some.

A quality reissue can offer a great alternative to owning a scratchy original or spending big money on something scarce. They are are being offered by a well known high street music shop at the moment they appear to be russian. Does anyone have an experience of listening to the dol jazz blues vinyl reissues. My local hmv currently has a blue note vinyl display 95 of which are dol albums not actual blue note reissues.

Not every pressing of theirs is bad though. Best avoided or worth a punt. That said many factors help determine whether you ve purchased a good or bad pressing of a record. It s a nice and heavy 180g record and the label and spindle hole were also top notch.
